Obituary

     JoEtta Dixon, age 80, of Harrisburg, passed away at 12:40 PM, Sunday, October 31, 2021 at her daughter’s home in Metropolis, surrounded by family.

     JoEtta was born on August 12, 1941 in New Haven, to the late William Donis and Josephine (Cathey) Watts.  She married Charles Dixon on December 21, 1957, and he preceded her in death on October 22, 2004. JoEtta attended Buena Vista Community Church. She worked as a nurse and security guard at the Illinois Youth Center in Harrisburg. JoEtta was also a licensed horse trainer.

     JoEtta was an avid bowler and golfer. She was a member of the Lucky Strike Bowling Team as well as the Saline County Golf Course. One of her favorite pastimes was gambling. She loved going to the riverboat and playing the “one-armed bandits”. JoEtta loved to dance, in fact, she was up for just about anything fun. If you said “let’s go”, she was ready. She enjoyed raising thoroughbred horses and later raising cattle.

     JoEtta is survived by three children, son, David Lee Dixon and wife, Mary of Rudement; daughter, Vicki Sparks and husband, Larry of Metropolis; son Daniel Wayne Dixon of Harrisburg; five grandchildren, Jason Sparks and wife, Emily of Waukee, Iowa; Krissy Sparks of Las Vegas, Nevada; Jacob Dixon and wife, Michelle of Rudement; Travis Dixon and wife, Hannah of Rudement; Zachary Dixon and wife, Lylah of Glen Bernie, Maryland; 7 great-grandchildren, Braxton Sparks; Liliana Sparks; Georgia Sparks; Griffin Sparks; Paisley Sparks; Nova Dixon; and Nolan Dixon; grand dog, Layla; brother, Wilby Watts of New Haven; sisters, Mary Lynn Lutz of Madisonville, Kentucky; Wilma Buttry of Norris City; Linda Lee Rae of Indiana; sister-in-law, Loretta Lighthall; brother-in-law, Jimmy Dixon; sister-in-law, Carolyn Riley; special friend, Charles Bebout and several nieces and nephews.

     In addition to her husband, Charles Dixon and parents, William Donis and Josephine (Cathey) Watts, JoEtta was preceded by her brother, Donis Ray Watts.

      Funeral services will be held at 1 PM, Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg.  Rev. Blake Bradley will officiate and burial will follow in Sunset Garden Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 PM until 8 PM, Monday, November 8, 2021. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
