Roy Edward Volkert, age 65, of Raleigh, passed away at 2:49 PM, Sunday, October 4, 2020 at Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.
Roy was born on December 25, 1954 in Rosiclare, Illinois to Charles William and Doris Gertrude (Turner) Volkert. In 1974 he married Cheryl Evetts and she survives.
Roy formerly served as a dispatcher for Eldorado and Saline County. He also served as an Auxiliary Police Officer for Saline County. Roy later worked for Kerr McGee mine in Galatia while serving as Chief of Police for Carrier Mills.
Roy was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed camping, woodworking and restoring vintage automobiles. There are too many automobiles to list, but his pride and joy was a red and white 1956 Chevy Bel Air coupe. Roy loved music; he also loved playing music. He performed as an electric bass player in Skyward Vocal Band and the Revelators. The Revelators actually sang on the Grand Ole Opry stage the same evening as the Oak Ridge Boys first sang “Elvira”.
Roy is survived by his wife, Cheryl of Raleigh; three children, daughter, Sherry Price and husband, Michael of Rogersville, Tennessee; son, Anthony Volkert and wife, Jennifer of New Burnside; Brent Volkert and wife, Ashley of Harrisburg; four grandchildren, Haley and Shelly Volkert of New Burnside; Tyler and Luke Volkert of Harrisburg; sister Christine Hobbs of Elizabethtown; brother, Tony Volkert and wife, Carrie of Minnesota; sister, Marie Hale of Norris City; sister, Debbie Clay and husband, Chris of Raleigh; brother, Dewayne “Glenn” Volkert of Mt. Vernon, Indiana and several nieces and nephews.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents and two infant siblings.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM, Friday, October 9, 2020 at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg, Illinois. Pastor Harold Miller will officiate and burial will follow in Cowsert Cemetery near Rosiclare. Visitation will be held at Reed Funeral Chapel from 5 PM to 8 PM, Thursday, October 8, 2020 at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. Memorials may be made to Cowsert Cemetery and envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
