Gerald Wayne Heflin, age 68, of Galatia, passed away at 5:22 AM, Sunday, January 17, 2021 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana.
Gerald was born on December 16, 1952 in Eldorado, Illinois to Claude Gerald “Hardrock” Heflin and Henrietta (Stout) Beltz. On October 5, 1973 he married Debbie Phelps and they shared 47 years of marriage.
Gerald worked as a coal miner, retiring from Brushy Creek Coal Mine. He was also a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 318. Additionally, Gerald worked on the farm and volunteered his services at Ebenezer Cemetery. Tuesday afternoons, he could be found with friends at Harrisburg Hunters Club. He was an avid marksman and enjoyed all types of hunting. Formerly he hunted birds and rabbits and most recently enjoyed deer hunting. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and his grandchildren were the “light of his life”. He was Debbie’s best friend and her one and only true love and a great man.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Debbie Heflin of Galatia; mother, Henrietta Beltz of Harrisburg; two children, daughter, Chasidy Price and husband, Cullen of Thompsonville; son, Aaron Heflin of Galatia; three grandchildren, Cletus Price and wife, Molly of Galatia; Colee Teal and husband, Nathan of Galatia; Corissa Price of Thompsonville; brother, Bill Heflin and wife, Patty of Galatia; sister, Carolyn Saling of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 2 nieces, Heather and Hillary; 4 nephews, Morgan, Cody, Claude and Sam; aunt, Brenda Bartley of Galatia; and uncle, Charles Wayne “Charlie” Heflin of Galatia.
Gerald was preceded in death by his father and a nephew, Stephen Saling.
Graveside services will be held at 1 PM on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at Ebenezer Cemetery in Thompsonville. Rev. Kevin Peyton will officiate. Those wishing to attend should gather at the cemetery and are asked to wear a mask and abide by all social distancing guidelines. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ebenezer Cemetery or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
