George William Overstreet, age 84, of Stonefort, passed away at 9:50 a.m., Friday, January 1, 2021 at Harrisburg Medical Center.
George was born on November 9, 1936 in Stonefort, Illinois to the late Cecil and Jaunita (Johnson) Overstreet. He married Rita Richerson on September 4, 1971, and she survives. George and Rita shared 49 years of marriage. George served his country in the United States Army from 1960 to 1962. George was a coal miner and worked for Peabody Coal Company at Will Scarlett Mine, Eagle #2, and the Marrisa Mine. George was a member of UMWA and enjoyed his work. He also enjoyed hunting, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. George enjoyed taking his children fishing when they were little.
George is survived by his wife, Rita Overstreet, of Stonefort; three children, daughter, Christy Lewis and husband, Steve of Harrisburg; daughter, Karen Moore and husband, Bill of West Frankfort; daughter, Sandy Reeder and Brad McCuan of Tunnel Hill; five grandchildren, Cassidy Russell and husband, Brad; Austin Lewis and wife, Jackie; Jacob Lewis and wife, Kayla; Sawyere Dallas and Colby Reeder; six great-grandchildren, Brendan, Mason, Blakelyn, Aubrey, Henley, and Mylee; brother, James Overstreet of Carrier Mills; sister, Mary Pennell and husband, Jim of Dickson, Tennessee; several nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents, grandbaby Moore; brothers, Jack Overstreet; John Overstreet and Cecil “Butch” Overstreet.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, January 4, 2021 at Salem Cemetery in Carrier Mills, Illinois. Rev. Ron Ferguson will officiate. Those wishing to attend are asked to gather at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Walnut Grove Baptist Church. Envelopes will be available at the cemetery.
