George Frederick Henley, age 87, of Harrisburg, passed away at 11:57 PM, Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at his residence.
George was born on July 12, 1932, in Harrisburg, to the late Frederick and Halleen (Ferguson) Henley. On September 12, 1964 he married Lynda Nolen and she survives in Harrisburg. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg. George served in the U.S. Navy and was a Korean War veteran. He began his law enforcement career as a Harrisburg City Police Officer, he then worked as Chief of Security for the A. L. Bowen Center for thirteen years and was then elected Saline County Sheriff for twenty years. George was a member of the Illinois Sheriff’s Association.
George played college football at both Florida State University and Southern Illinois University. His hobbies included horses, boating, jeeping and motorcycles. All of his hobbies included his family. He enjoyed cooking and was considered an excellent cook. He also loved just driving. George was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
George is survived by three children; son, Roby Podoriscki and wife Delia of Harrisburg, Illinois; daughter, Cynthia Henley of Harrisburg, Illinois; son, Brent Henley of Harrisburg, Illinois; seven grandchildren; Ross Bergman of Harrisburg, Illinois; Brock Bergman of Harrisburg, Illinois; Blane Podoriscki of Marion, Illinois; Ann Marie Podoriscki of Harrisburg, Illinois; Walker Henley of Harrisburg, Illinois; Paisley Henley of Harrisburg, Illinois; Shawnee Henley of Harrisburg, Illinois; sister, Barbara Aaron of Moscow, Idaho, several nieces and nephews and “Homer”.
George was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM, Sunday, November 24, 2019 at Reed Funeral Chapel. Rev. Brad Vinyard will officiate and burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 AM to 2 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to Harrisburg’s Shop With A Cop program.
