Obituary

     Dr. John E. Rogers, a person of faith and practice, passed away at the age of 86 on April 29, 2021, surrounded by his wife and stepdaughter.
     He was born on September 24, 1934, in Murphysboro, Illinois, to John H. and Leona Irene (Stone) Rogers.   He graduated from Murphysboro Township High School in 1953. He enlisted in the US military, and served in the army beginning on December 22, 1954. He advanced to the rank of Specialist 3rd Class, and was honorably discharged on December 10, 1957.
     John was a graduate of Monterey Peninsula College (CA); Salinas Community College (CA) ; Walnut Ridge (AK) (currently Williams Baptist University); Southeast Missouri State University (MO); Southern Illinois University Carbondale (IL); Mid-Continent University (KY). Seminaries attended: Luther Rice Seminary (FL); Bethany Theological Seminary (AL); Trinity College and Theological Seminary (IN). In addition, he earned 3 PhD's majoring in religion, psychology, and Christian counseling.
      Throughout his life, John worked in many occupations including carpentry and insurance sales; as well as McDonnell Douglas Aircraft. He also worked as a grocery store clerk, and went on to own and operate his own grocery store. As a younger man, John was recognized in his local newspaper as the first male employee at Steak and Shake (CA). He was also a sports enthusiast, and won multiple awards while participating in local golf tournaments.
    John was saved at the age of 13, and began preaching at the age of 27. During his 59 years of ministry, he served as pastor of numerous churches throughout California, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Illinois.
 He served as Director of Missions for Antioch/Big Saline Associations in Southeastern Illinois and Church Planter Strategist for NAMB.  He also worked as a professor at Global Theological Seminary Jinja, Uganda, East Africa for 3 years.  John served on the board of trustees at Mid-Continent University (KY).  He also served as Interim pastor at Highview Baptist Church (IL). Prior to the onset of sudden illness, John was actively serving as Director of Uganda Baptist Missions through Grace Baptist Church.
     He authored and published many works: His Glorious Church, Biblical Counseling Plus,
and New Members Ministries syllabus. He worked to develop a tri-level course in religion titled “Christianity Through The Ages” for the class curriculum at Bethany Theological Seminary (AL). Most recently, he completed Who Said So, a book that was instrumental to John's lectures while teaching at the university level in Uganda, East Africa. Many of his students became pastors and missionaries, and thousands were saved and baptized through the work of his ministry.
     On February 4, 1956, John was married to the late Patricia L. (Ridgway) Rogers of Carbondale, IL. They had 2 children Marilyn Dunaway (deceased) and a son Michael E. (Liz) Rogers of Naples, FL.  They also had 3 grandchildren Michelle Rogers, Cherie (Rogers) Landowski, and Chad Smith (Angela); as well as 3 great grandchildren Dakota, Mackenzie, and Aimee. On April 29, 2017, he was married to Carolyn ( Davidson) Rogers of Harrisburg, IL.  While no children were born to the marriage, John is survived by his stepdaughter, Lisa Miles; 2 grandchildren Rachel Miles and Sarah (Aaron) Rayborn; and 2 great grandchildren, Alex and Austin.  
     John is also survived by siblings Mary (Daniel) Martinez, Roberta Rogers, Vanita Faulkner, Jewell (Terry) Wilson; several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.  John is preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, 2 brothers, and 1 niece.  
     Visitation will be from 4-6pm at Grace Baptist Church, with the service beginning at 6pm. A meal will be provided immediately following. John’s family would like to thank their family and friends and all those who have supported them during this time.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Uganda Missions Fund: C/O Grace Baptist Church, 42 Highway 34N Raleigh, IL 62977.
