Robert “Bob” Dean Starnes, Sr., age 77, went home to be with the Lord on October 31, 2019 at 6:42 in the evening
He passed away in Hospice care at the Marion VA Community Living Center with his loved ones by his side.
He was born in Gary, Indiana on September 19, 1942 to Melvin Orlin Starnes and Janie (Miller) Starnes. He was one of six children. His siblings are: Lowell Francis (Frank) Starnes, Everett Theodore Starnes (Bud), Myrna Jean (Starnes) Owen, James Marion Starnes of Henderson, Kentucky and Janice Marie (Starnes) Dunn of Harrisburg, Illinois.
Robert Graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1961 and joined the Air Force shortly after graduation. He married June (Anderson) Starnes Ritchie on March 7, 1962. They have three children: Annetta (Starnes) Scott Pate of Marysville, Washington, Robin Jean (Starnes) Haney of Harrisburg, IL and Robert Dean Starnes, Jr. of Harrisburg, Illinois. On November 20, 1990, Robert married Ethel Elizabeth (Sager) Scott Starnes in Hawaii. She has six children: John Scott, Jr., Walter Scott, Lavena Gschwandtner, Elouis Chase, Wyatt Scott and James Scott.
Robert served in the Air Force from 1961 – 1969. While in the Air Force he was stationed in Turkey. He opened his own business in New Jersey and then moved to Virginia. While in Virginia he joined the Navy in 1982 and served until 1994. He had served his country for a total of 20 years. While in the Navy he served during Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
Robert was preceded in death by his father and mother, his brothers, Lowell (Frank) and Everett Theodore (Bud), his sister, Myrna, his second wife, Ethel and two children, Wyatt Scott and Lavena Gschwandtner.
Robert is survived by his first wife, June Ritchie, his children, Annetta Pate, Robin Haney, Robert Starnes, Jr., John Scott, Walter Scott, Elouise Chase, James Scott, his sister, Janice Dunn, brother, James Starnes and several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The most recent thing that Robert loved to do was dress up as Santa. He was hired through the Illinois Center Mall to be Santa. He started dressing up as Santa while ringing the bell for the Salvation Army.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Monday, November 4, 2019 at Reed Funeral Chapel. Rev. Mark Hiltibidal will officiate. Visitation will be held from 9 AM to 11 AM at Reed Funeral Chapel.
